Political Scandal in Mexico City: Mayor Accuses Opposition of Spying

Political tensions are escalating in Mexico City's third most populous borough, Álvaro Obregón, ahead of next year's elections. The opposition is attempting to regain the district, which was governed by PAN party member Lía Limón until 2024, when she lost to Javier López Casarín. This weekend, the Morena party mayor, Javier López Casarín, intensified his public accusations of an alleged espionage case involving a person linked to the opposition. He linked this individual to PAN party deputy Lizzette Salgado, who worked in Álvaro Obregón during Limón's previous administration. Casarín stated, "It is clear that they sent that person to follow me." In turn, Salgado, who was Limón's personal secretary when she was mayor, asserted that "the events did not happen as he says" and denied ordering the mayor's surveillance. She also alleged that he intimidated her during a phone call that followed his initial public complaint. This new dispute between the ruling party and the opposition in one of the CDMX's most important boroughs began on Friday, when the mayor denounced that, after leaving the prosecutor Bertha Alcalde's report, a motorcyclist followed him while taking photographs and videos of his security team. Casarin asked, "What is the objective of this intimidation?" and emphasized that differences should not be addressed in this way. He demanded "not to normalize these actions," stating that "the modus operandi of organized crime most often involves motorcycles."
